Mission & Vision

Why we gather, how we serve, and what we hope to become.

Our mission and vision describe the kind of parish we are called to be in Westphal and the wider Dartmouth community: prayerful, hospitable, grounded, and outward-looking.

Mission Statement

To worship faithfully, welcome generously, and serve our neighbours with compassion.

At St John's Anglican Church, Westphal, our mission is to gather around the presence of God in prayer, scripture, sacrament, and shared life, so that faith becomes visible in the way we love one another and serve our community. We believe the church is called to be both spiritually rooted and practically engaged. Worship forms us, but it also sends us out. Because of that, we seek to be a parish where reverent liturgy, thoughtful teaching, pastoral care, and everyday kindness belong together.

We want every person who enters our doors to encounter genuine welcome rather than distance, and clear invitation rather than uncertainty. Our mission includes children, elders, families, visitors, and people who may be returning to church after a long absence. We hope to encourage discipleship that is steady rather than performative, and service that is humble rather than self-promoting. In Westphal and Dartmouth, this means listening well, caring consistently, and remaining present to the needs of neighbours, especially in moments of grief, transition, loneliness, or spiritual searching.

Vision Statement

A parish that remains deeply local while growing in spiritual depth and practical reach.

Our vision is that, over the next decade, St John's will continue to mature as a vibrant Anglican parish where worship is reverent, leadership is shared, and community life is marked by warmth, reliability, and grace. We want to deepen the quality of our common prayer, strengthen pastoral relationships, and create clear pathways for participation in study, fellowship, outreach, and service. Rather than chasing trends, our hope is to become more fully ourselves: a church that is recognizable by its integrity, its steadiness, and its care for people.

We also aspire to be a stronger spiritual anchor in Dartmouth by making our presence more legible to the surrounding community. That includes welcoming first-time visitors well, supporting intergenerational parish life, and sustaining ministries that respond to both spiritual and practical needs. Our vision is not built on scale alone. It is built on faithfulness, continuity, and the conviction that a local church can still offer depth, beauty, and belonging in a fragmented world.
